With all the problems that have visited this project on its way to completion, and with all the speculation — both by scientists and interested researchers — on what the implications of a successful search for the Higgs’ boson could mean, I’m not sure how I feel about this announcement.

Spelling does not appear — nor in my estimation has it ever appeared — to be the strong suit of American-English. Ours is a spoken miracle of a language that does not get translated accurately to paper — or file, sign, letter, poster, whatever — by the majority of its adherents. Makes you wonder what the word adherent really means, doesn’t it?

We look at information on a day-to-day basis, and sometimes, only fleetingly, consider its usefulness. In terms of this list of companies that may close in 2009, we may do ourselves a service by paying attention. Each of these companies have inventory of some kind — which, I guess, in the case of Krispy Kreme donuts is exactly the problem — and will need to liquidate these assets. Might do a person well to keep an eye on the liquidators of various items and commodities. The silver linings on clouds come in many ways, both predictable and unpredictable.

To all of you that have listened to the AllnAll with Paul since its inception as a semi-regular podcast, your wait for the next episode is almost over. This one has been a long time coming, in thta AllnAlls never get recorded before their time. This episode will feature highlights of a couple of failed attempts to get episode 12 out — each were beset with both technical and calnder-related difficulties. The Holiday season still takes its toll on me — Grandkids and the like being the thrust of my interest in it, at this point. So, keep your eyes peeled to the iTunes feed over the next week. You never know when Episode 12 will show — I hope only that it is worth it when it does.

Sure, Vista has a more protective security model and an updated look — neither of which seem to be enough for people to voluntarily adopt the OS — but is that really what we’re looking for in a desktop OS. In the wake of the Pennsylvania Primary, both Democrat candidates are off “spinning” the results — as we expect them to. A closer look at the bottom-line results of Hillary’s “decisive win” shows that it ain’t so darned decisive after all. She picked up — get this — one more delegate than did Mr. Obama. Now, I certainly expect that the Clinton campaign will continue to try to paint this as some sort of come-from-behind win. Actually, she was originally favored to win the thing by near 20 percent, which — if you factor that expectation against result — sounds like a 10 percent shortfall to me.

Back Atcha With That Quantum Pencil Lead

Some stories just don’t go away, but get curiouser and curiouser. Now they’ve taken the substance, called graphene, and made a transistor one atom thick by ten atoms wide. That’s pretty damned small and may lead the way to even more breakthroughs in this field. Can the marvels of science keep coming to fruition in the vacuum of knowledge without spirit. Firstly, I think not. Secondly, I believe that it is in the sub-atomic and quantum realities that we will start to rediscover the true harmony of science and spirit.

NFL.com’s Top-10 List of Draft Day Steals

While I can’t say that any entry on this list shouldn’t be here, I can say that anyone could remove one and add another, not listed, and pretty much be spot-on right anyway. The fact that it’s NFL.com publishing the opinion on their own “product,” if you will, actually bothers me more than it delights me. As a lifelong football fan, I’ve been recently concerned and more recently disturbed by the NFL’s seeming need to be the entity that covers football “better than anyone else.” The top-10 list I’m linking to is pretty cool and somewhat informative, but could’ve been done by any other reporting entity and maintained a lot more journalistic credibility. In my mind, if the NFL is interested in investing in and, through that investment, profiting from an all-football TV channel and/or website, it should do so. On the other hand, to unabashedly cover ones own efforts and expect the public to assume unbiased coverage is stretching the limits.

The Graphite from the Tip of a Pencil May Crack the Quantum Code

A major breakthrough in studying the universe, quantum mechanics and more? Maybe. It certainly seems that this breakthrough might be a little more palatable than the £4.5 Billion CERN Particle Accelerator, which is surrounded by controversy. The push to scientifically discover and then exploit a singularity is the fear attached with the CERN project. Could this lessen the danger of such research? I certainly hope so. However, it should be noted that the thought of danger in this research has been — conveniently or not — associated with irrational fear of the unknown. At any rate, this sure was an interesting read.

An Interesting Contrast, Given Last Week’s News

First off, it’s a shame that some societies are so misogynistic that we have to realize the horrible realities that this story points too; however, it is certainly instructive to see what kind of effect a social networking site such as FaceBook can have in a restrictive environment. I also find it an interesting contrast to the posting I placed here last week. It seems that in the United States, we have the child killing the parent over social networking sites, and in the Middle East, it’s the parent that takes the child out. Whatever happened to the idea that individuals have both value and rights.
